Averages and Range

GCSE

Averages and Range

An average is a single value that represents a typical number in a data set. There are three types: mean, median, and mode.

The three averages

Mean: add all values and divide by how many there are. Median: the middle value once sorted. Mode: the value that appears most often.

Range

Range measures spread — subtract the smallest value from the largest. A small range means the data is clustered together; a large range means it's spread out.

Practice

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of: 4, 7, 4, 9, 6.
