Adaptation and Inheritance

Year 6

Adaptation and Inheritance

Offspring inherit characteristics from their parents, but they're not identical to either parent — variation exists even within the same species.

Adaptation

An adaptation is a feature that helps a living thing survive in its environment, like a polar bear's thick fur for warmth, or a cactus's ability to store water in the desert.

Natural selection

Living things with characteristics better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing those characteristics on — over many generations, this changes what's common in a population.

Practice

Why might a rabbit with fur that changes to white in winter have an advantage over one that doesn't?
