Reading Bar Charts

A bar chart uses bars of different heights to show and compare amounts. The taller the bar, the bigger the value.

Reading the scale

Check the numbers along the side (the y-axis) before reading any bar — some charts count up in 2s, 5s, or 10s, not always 1s.

Comparing bars

To find the difference between two bars, read each value off the scale and subtract the smaller from the larger.

Practice

If a chart's scale counts up in 5s and a bar reaches the 4th line, what value does it show?
