Wave Properties

A wave transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. Waves are described by their wavelength, frequency, and amplitude.

Key measurements

Wavelength is the distance between one point on a wave and the same point on the next wave. Frequency is how many waves pass a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz). Amplitude is the maximum height of the wave from its resting position.

The wave equation

Wave speed = frequency × wavelength. If you know two of these values, you can calculate the third.

Practice

A wave has a frequency of 5Hz and a wavelength of 2m. What's its speed?
