Light and Shadows

Light travels in straight lines from a source, like the sun or a lamp. We see objects when light bounces off them and into our eyes.

How shadows form

A shadow forms when an opaque object blocks light from reaching a surface behind it. The shadow is always the same shape as the object blocking the light.

Why shadows change size

A shadow gets bigger when the light source is close to the object, and smaller when the light source is far away or high up (like the sun at midday).

Practice

Why are your shadows longer in the morning and evening than at midday?
