States of Matter
Matter exists in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas.
- Solids keep their shape (a brick, an ice cube).
- Liquids take the shape of their container but keep their volume (water, juice).
- Gases spread out to fill any space (steam, air).
Changing state
Heating ice turns it into water (melting). Heating water turns it into steam (evaporating). Cooling steam turns it back into water (condensing).
