Introduction to Algebra

Algebra uses letters to represent unknown numbers. An expression like 3x + 5 means "3 times some number, plus 5".

Solving simple equations

To solve 2x + 4 = 10:

  1. Subtract 4 from both sides: 2x = 6
  2. Divide both sides by 2: x = 3

Practice

Solve: 5x - 3 = 12, 3(x + 2) = 15.
