Place Value and Rounding

Year 4

Place Value and Rounding

Place value tells us what a digit is worth depending on where it sits in a number. In 356, the 3 is worth 300 (hundreds), the 5 is worth 50 (tens), and the 6 is worth 6 (ones).

Reading and ordering numbers

To compare two numbers, look at the biggest place value first. 356 is bigger than 349 because 5 tens is more than 4 tens, even though both start with 3 hundreds.

Rounding to the nearest 10

Look at the ones digit. If it's 5 or more, round up; if it's less than 5, round down. 47 rounds to 50. 42 rounds to 40.

Practice

Try rounding these to the nearest 10: 63, 78, 24, 95.
